📣 News & Updates

The January 2026 guild meeting opened with a strong turnout of 77 members. We were pleased to welcome 3 new members, bringing our total membership to 170.

Our new Guild President, George Gleckler, kicked off the meeting by welcoming visitors and new members. George opened the floor for announcements and tool sales before handing the meeting over to Vice President Phil Morgan.

Important Vendor Update: Metro Hardwood

Phil informed the guild that Metro Hardwood has decided to discontinue their 10% discount for Lee’s Summit Woodworkers Guild members. Unfortunately, management made no effort to contact guild leadership to arrange for the retrieval of guild property; it appears the property was instead discarded.

Additionally, Phil shared that the Independence Wood Turners—who have met at Metro Hardwood for many years—were turned away on the night of their scheduled meeting. They were informed they could no longer meet at the location and were instructed to remove their tools immediately.

Many members expressed disappointment regarding Metro Hardwood’s handling of these transitions and asked about alternative lumber sources. Phil reminded the group that our website lists several vendors who still offer member discounts, and the leadership team is actively working to expand that list in the coming months.

🧠 Program: “Dust Collection Re-imagined” by Randy Stone

Randy Stone presented a unique departure from traditional dust collection systems. He shared a video detailing the specific challenges of his shop: limited space, the need to support multiple tools simultaneously, and the requirement for high suction to capture fine dust at the point of the cut.

The Solution: An Automated Arduino-Controlled System Randy designed a fully automated system featuring:

Arduino Intelligence: A central controller and sensors that automatically open the correct gate when a tool is activated.

3D Printed Ball Valves: Custom-made blast gates operated by servo motors.

The Powerhouse: A 4 HP Record Power CamVac Dust Extractor.

Randy explained that unlike standard collectors that rely on high CFM (volume), the CamVac relies on high static pressure. To demonstrate this power, he showed how the vacuum is strong enough to lift the steel collection canister off the ground. He cautioned that when using tools with 2.5-inch ports, he must limit the number of active motors on the CamVac to prevent the extreme vacuum from crushing the steel canister.

Randy has graciously invited guild members to see the system in person. You can view the interview and system video [HERE].

✨ Show and Tell

The meeting concluded with a popular Show and Tell session featuring an array of projects ranging from fine furniture to small crafts. We look forward to seeing your latest creations at the next meeting!
