Roy Wall, Guild President, opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and recognizing the visitors.

We had 75 members in attendance and several visitors who came to listen to our guest speaker, Lizzy Cook from the House of Timber.

Ben Simmons announced that he and his wife will be hosting an open house for anyone interested in coming by and viewing his latest creations on the wood lathe and talking woodworking. They will be opening their home on October 24th through the 26th from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. If you are interested in attending, please reach out to Ben for directions.

Jim Wentworth announced that the Lee’s Summit Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is hosting the Veterans Day parade in downtown Lee’s Summit and would like to see the many veterans in the guild participate in the parade. Ken Wentworth, a World War II and Korean War veteran, will be the Grand Marshal. A free ham and bean lunch will be served following the parade. Please reach out to Jim for additional information.

John Freeland will be reaching out to several members who have not paid their 2024 dues to find out if they are still interested in being members of the Lee’s Summit Wood Guild. Additionally, we are accepting dues for 2025 and the price is still just $20.00.

We have 36 members that we don’t have a photo for in our online member directory. A separate email will be coming out to those 36 individuals letting them know and how we can assist them in getting their picture taken at the next meeting. Having a photo in the directory is important because not all members will remember a person’s name, but they will remember what you look like and can find you in the directory, provided we have your photo.

Phil brought in the new Microjig gripper clamps that work with their Matchfit system. The clamps have an easy one-handed operation and a quick-release trigger built into the handle. They work with any ½ inch by 14-degree dovetail groove and are compatible with T-track and track saw tracks, including Festool. They can be found at Rockler, Amazon, and many other online tool stores, but Taylor Tools in Columbia has them on sale. With the addition of our 10% discount and free shipping, you can’t beat the price. Be sure to use your membership card to obtain the discount.

Lee’s Summit Guild members had the extraordinary opportunity to hear from local woodworker and artist, Lizzy Cook. She spoke about her life story and how she developed her love for woodworking, specifically using the scroll saw. Lizzy is an incredibly strong young lady who found the courage to strike out on her own after leaving a violent marriage. Lizzy left for Nashville and while living there, she rekindled her love for woodworking, instilled in her by her grandmother many years before. Her neighbor became a source of honest feedback on her projects. She knew she had succeeded when her neighbor was genuinely impressed with one of her creations.

Not long after this, she moved back to Kansas and started her business making custom, one-of-a-kind, 3D signs using her scroll saw. She is the owner of The House of Timber here in Kansas City and her work is spectacular. You can watch her story through the Mid-Continent Library “Nice to Meet You” series and you can find her website here: The House of Timber – Custom Wood Working

Once again, the guild members brought in their projects and provided further evidence to what a super talented group of people they are. You can view photos of their work here.
